I know that film does not correspond to this photo, but I just love how the Fred/Ginger movies eventually all started referencing each other - I always think of this adorable little quote whenever I see this dress on Ginger Rogers in Carefree (1938). I never quite know if all of these references are intentional, but I’d like to believe they are - these two certainly built up enough of a body of cinematic work to allow directors to play around with being meta. Even in the scene preceding this one, the camera lingers over a magazine cover advertising Little Red Riding Hood CAPES far too long for it to be just a coincidence with Ginger’s Swing Time “it’s a cape!” moment.
Now - this dress! Amanda Cooper looks pretty darling here, no?
I assume the clusterfuck broken-hearted emblem is meant to signify the character’s flighty, disastrous love-crazy throughout the film (justifiable - I know I’d be going wackadoodle if I was involved in a love triangle that was complicated by hypnosis), but on the other hand, I feel like it might just be included to add a nice dramatic design touch to a hilariously theatrical scene - Whimsy Chic, if you will. I like that the overall look gives off this vibe of prim austerity, given the conservative cut of the dress, but with a bit of flair (the flair being the hat, and the furs, and the jewelry…ok, so maybe it’s a pretty flashy look when all of the elements are in place. but the girl needs to make an IMPACT on screen and this makes her appear FUN yet DECEPTIVELY PUT-TOGETHER while SECRETLY GOING CRAZY, which is perfect for the plot.)
Also, seriously – Ginger’s tour de force dream narrative monologue in this dress? MUST WATCH:
